Children ages 4 to 7 learn best through active, hands-on experiences. Movement, music, touch, and social interaction aren’t just engaging additions: they are essential to how young children develop lasting memory and language. Sitting passively in front of a screen does not build the foundations needed for reading.
At The Reading Lodge, every lesson is intentionally designed to be interactive and multisensory. Children work with illustrated cards, felt letters, wooden manipulatives, books, and dry-erase boards while guided by an instructor. Through purposeful actions and song, each sound is reinforced in a way that makes learning memorable. From beginning to end, the learning experience is active, social, and engaging. For this reason, child-facing screens and devices are not used in our program. This is a deliberate research-informed choice, rooted in how young children learn best.
How The Reading Lodge Works
Explorers attend two sessions a week for 14 weeks, working in small groups of 6 to 10 with a dedicated Guide. Each session is hands-on and screen-free, built around movement, song, and multisensory practice rather than worksheets or passive instruction. Parents drop off and pick up, giving children the freedom to focus, take risks, and engage fully with their peers.

The Reading Lodge is built on Jolly Phonics, one of the world’s most widely used systematic phonics programs. Developed by educators Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd and published by Jolly Learning Ltd., Jolly Phonics is used in classrooms in more than 150 countries and has been the subject of research examining its impact on early literacy.
